How the World Works

Climate change is at the core of our research because it profoundly alters the fragile links among all life forms. These changes endanger the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the functional landscape on which we build a working economy.

Deforestation Studies

Projects in the rainforests of the Amazon and the Congo and in the boreal forest of Russia show how trees are affected by climatic changes. The effects appear as vulnerability to diseases and pests, increased morbidity and mortality of trees.

Alternative Energy

Our new building was designed to work like a living ecosystem. It is largely self-sustaining, burns no fossil fuels, purifies the water that leaves the building and relies on natural forces of sun and wind for power, heating and cooling.

Environmental Policy

The Woods Hole Research Center maintains an active Policy Program to remain at the forefront of those advancing the use of alternative fuels to halt the warming of the earth. Recent history confirms the immediate necessity of reducing dependence on oil as a vital step in restoring the integrity of the human environment and as an important factor in national and international security.
