Defusing the Arctic Carbon Bomb
How and Why Your Support is Needed
- Integration among the studies of hydrology, river water chemistry, permafrost thaw vulnerability, and satellite image analysis requires funding that transcends the individual investigator awards typically made by federal agencies.
- Funding for studies in Russia is extremely difficult to obtain from US federal funding agencies, and yet the Russian Arctic contains by far the largest expanse of carbon stored in permafrost and wetlands, and it is where our understanding is the poorest.
- The scientific research should go hand-in-hand with effective planning to translate that research into compelling outreach and communication products for the general public. Short of this, the work will not fulfill its great potential to demonstrate the urgency to mitigate fossil fuel emissions and conserve forests in other parts of the world in order to diffuse the arctic carbon time bomb.
- The need is urgent, time is of essence, and we are poised to launch a major new research and communication campaign to draw attention in short order to the rapid changes taking place in the Arctic, and, indeed, the globe.
Your partnership in our effort to help defuse the Arctic Carbon Bomb is vital to long term success in this fight against climate changeā¦
What will your legacy be? Whether you'd like to help train the next generation of climate scientists, protect the great tundra landscapes, invest in scientific research that informs solutions or are simply challenged about the importance of the Arctic, please take time to contact our Development Office so that they may help you achieve your philanthropic goals. You may never know the full impact of your giving, but future generations will.
