Research Assistant / Post-Doctoral Researcher – Amazon Fisheries Management


SUMMARY: A two-year position that reports to the Principal Investigator, Amazon Varzea Project. Responsibilities include fisheries management and research, and more generally research on floodplain and aquatic ecology and modeling of aquatic systems. The geographic focus is on the Brazilian Amazon. The position supports a larger project seeking to develop a regional co-management system for Lower Amazonian fisheries and floodplain resource management in general. The research assistant/associate will be expected to develop and coordinate participatory research projects on floodplain fisheries involving local communities and development of adaptive management systems for floodplain settlements. The research assistant/associate will also participate in research to develop models of floodplain and aquatic ecology and management systems, process and manipulate spatial data sets, work with a group of scientists to conduct model simulations, and prepare verbal and written presentations and publications based on the results. The candidate will be based at the Center but will spend substantial amounts of time in the Brazilian Amazon.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Coordinate projects in the adaptive management of floodplain fisheries and other resources
  • Participate in a larger project to model Amazon aquatic system and fisheries
  • Assist in the preparation of reports and publications
  • Other tasks as agreed upon in the course of the research

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:

Education: This position requires a doctoral degree in ecology, conservation biology, oceanography or related field.

Skills: Data management; modeling in fisheries biology; fluency in Portuguese.

Experience: Experience in the Brazilian Amazon in fisheries management and research; data analysis. Experience with statistical applications and ecological modeling, will be useful.
